In 1958, Mao started The Great Leap Forward, which was an attempt to modernize China's economy, and compete with countries like the USA. The Great Leap Forward was horrific, due to the deaths of around 30 million people. These deaths were a result of mass famine, and due to this, I do not think that it was as bad as Hitler and the Holocaust. I do not think that Mao's focus was to kill people, but the deaths were a result of his poor leadership. Whereas Hitler was deliberately killing millions of people because of his beliefs. Mao was to focused on the economy of his country, and did not care for the lives of his people. Although more people were killed in The Great Leap Forward, I still see the Holocaust as a worse event in History, because it was Hitlers intentions to have millions of people killed.

The Japanese were partially responsible for China becoming Communist in the 1900's. After China lost the Sino-Japanese War, Europeans created an open door policy. This started a nationalist outburst in China, which caused Sun Yat Sen to lead a revolution to rid China of foreigners in 1911, and soon becoming the first President of the Republic of China. After Sun Yat Sen died, Chiang Kia-Shek takes over as leader of the Kuomintang. After he fled, Mao Zedong began to rebuild the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Mao led his communists on a 9,000 km retreat across China, and began to gain power because of their resistance to the Japanese. During the Chinese Civil War, Mao, and the CPP liberated much of Northern China from the Japanese by 1945. While this was going on, Chiang and the Kuomintang were to focused on the War, and not on stopping the spread of communism. Eventually, Chaing and the Nationalists lost, and fled to the island of Formosa, and created Taiwan.
